Is the McNair Program a scholarship?
No. The McNair Scholars Program helps undergraduate students prepare for graduate studies. This is an academic program that requires time commitment and hard work.
Can all majors apply?
Yes, we have accepted students from a variety of disciplines. If you have a desire to pursue graduate studies at the Ph.D. level, then you should consider applying.
I'm a graduating senior, can I still apply?
Yes, seniors may apply. However, given that the program is designed as a 2 year program, senior applicants will not fully benefit from the program. In addition, applicants must be current CSUEB students to participate in the program. Since our summer research institute will take place during the following summer, seniors who are accepted must agree to extend their graduation date to the end of the summer term.
I'm a sophomore. Is it too early to become a McNair Scholar?
No. Occasionally exceptions to the printed eligibility criteria are made. It is especially important to begin the graduate school application process at least 1 year in advance. Collecting information about graduate schools and the application process is quite time consuming. It will take time to cultivate your research experience and to build relationships with faculty members who can write your letters of recommendation. Preparing for graduate school as a sophomore will put you at an advantage.
I don't have a 3.0 GPA, can I still apply?
Yes, but we do not recommend it. We look for a minimum GPA of 3.0 because this will be the minimum GPA one can have and still be a competitive applicant to graduate schools. McNair Scholars are required to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
I'm a graduate student, can I still apply?
No. The McNair Scholars Program prepares undergraduate students for graduate studies. If you have already completed your bachelor's degree then you are not an eligible candidate.
What if I'm interested in a professional degree (JD, MD, MBA, etc.), can I still apply?
The mission of the program is to increase the number of Ph.D.s attained by underrepresented groups. This program is not open to students desiring professional degrees. However, if you are interested in pursuing a joint Ph.D./J.D. or Ph.D./M.D. graduate program you may still apply.
I'm not sure I want to purse a Ph.D. right after I graduate, can I still apply?
If you are unsure, then this program may not be right for you. The McNair Scholars Program is intended for students who are serious about pursing a doctorate. You should speak with someone who can discuss with you the benefits of obtaining a Ph.D.
