UWSR Exemptions

Students who have completed a CSU degree or have taken one of the following exams and received the appropriate score are exempt from having to satisfy the University Writing Skills Requirement. Please note, however, that California State University, East Bay's Admissions Office or Testing Office must receive an official score report and enter it into your academic record before you are fully exempt from the UWSR requirement based on one of these tests. It is your responsibility to have your scores sent.

DEGREE FROM A CSU CAMPUS

If you have graduated with a degree (undergraduate or graduate) from any one of the 23 CSU campuses (which includes SFSU, SJSU, etc.), you have satisfied the CSUEB University Writing Skills Requirement.

GMAT

Exemption Score

4.5 or higher on the writing portion of the GMAT by graduate students accepted into their program Winter Quarter 1999 or later.

Additional Instructions

At the time you take the exam, select to have your score automatically reported to California State University, East Bay or you may present an official score report to the Testing Office. You may need to contact GMAT and request an official score report be sent to you. Upon receipt, do not open the envelope or break the seal. Bring the sealed envelope to the Testing Office. They will enter the score into your academic record and exempt you from the UWSR.

CBEST

Exemption Score

53 or higher on the writing portion of the CBEST by graduate students accepted into their program Winter Quarter 1999 or later

53 or higher on the writing portion of the CBEST by undergraduate students who took the exam Fall Quarter 2002 or later

GRE

Exemption Score

4.5 or higher on the analytic writing portion of the GRE General Test taken by graduate students in Fall Quarter 2002 or later.

Additional Information

Any student that graduated from a CSU or has satisfied the UWSR, also known as GWAR, at another CSU, has satisfied the University Writing Skills Requirement/ UWSR.
