MISSION STATEMENT
CSUEB students enrolled in any major are allowed to display and sell their art. The purpose of this program is to provide students with
an opportunity to experience real world situations, such as working with galleries. The artwork can feature contemporary art and traditional
fine art, paintings, sculpture, fine art photography, and multimedia. Students are allowed to submit as many pieces as they wish,
but only 2-3 will be chosen. Work will be displayed for 10 business days in the month of November 2009, then will be photograph.
Posting dates will vary depending on submission. Space is limited, so submit as soon as possible.
The images will be placed in a binder for future viewing purposes.
PREPARATION OF WORKS FOR EXHIBITION
Works must be suitably framed and wired for hanging. We use a rod & cable system to hang the art, which is unsecured.
Eyehook may be required for proper hanging of the pieces.
SELLING OF ART
CSUEB students are allowed to price their own art. If you're just starting out and have not sold very much, pricing your work based on time, labor, and cost of materials is often the best way to go. Set yourself a sensible hourly wage, add the cost of materials, and make that your asking price. If materials cost $25 and you take 10 hours to make the art at $7.50 per hour, then you price it at $175. Don't forget the comparables, though. You still want your final asking prices to be in line with what other artists with similar credentials to yours are charging for their work.
The best way to stay in the hunt is to make sure that you're always charging the same or even a little less than what you determine to be the "going rate" in any given selling circumstance. For example, if you're in a group show or exhibition, enter a piece that's priced competitively with those of the other artists. You don't want to have the most expensive piece in the show; you don't want the first impression that collectors have of your work to be sticker shock. You want it to stand out for art reasons, not money reasons.
Lastly, have something for everyone. Offer art in all price ranges. People who like your work, but can't afford the big stuff should at least have the opportunity to come away with something. These are your biggest fans, your collector base, the people who will stand by you throughout your career. Do whatever you can to provide them with art. That's the best way to maximize your exposure, create good will, get yourself out there, jump start your sales, and become known and respected in the arts community.
SECURITY
The art gallery is an unsecured unstaffed public area. The University Union cannot make assurances that artwork will not be damaged or stolen. There are strategic security cameras placed throughout the building. An exhibit agreement will be signed by a representative of the art organization /artist prior to hanging. Artists will be required to submit a listing of titles and prices of all works intended for display at least one week prior to hanging.
Please note that works may not be removed from the premises before the closing of the exhibition, nor may works be added without the written consent of the University Union.
DELIVERY AND PICKUP OF WORKS
The art organization / artist is responsible for transporting the works to and from the University Union’s display area. The delivery / pickup schedule for each organization must be agreed upon in advance by the art organization /artist and the University Union. Individuals delivering art should use the main entrance.
IMPORTANT: A representative of the art organization /artist must be on the premises during delivery of works. Names of the organization’s representatives should be provided to the University Union’s Maintenance Department at least one full week prior to delivery.
