Center for Sport and Social Justice

Let’s PLAY!

It’s time to change the way our society thinks about sport and physical activity. At the Center for Sport and Social Justice, we are passionate about making sport at every level more inclusive, more democratic…and joyful!

The mission of the Center for Sport & Social Justice at CSU East Bay is to promote inclusion and social justice in sport and physical activity through community engagement and scholarly activities.

We keep the conversation open through ongoing research, workshops, lectures, and community outreach. We provide a network for CSU East Bay students and faculty, community members, and academic experts to share ideas and experiences. Most importantly, we find innovative ways to use sport as a vehicle to create positive and lasting social change.

If you’re ready to get involved, we’d love to have you on our team!

Check out our Student Club page for ways to get involved as a student, if interested in learning more about advisory board membership please contact Matthew Atencio or Missy WrightAnd we welcome donations to the Center!

Statement on Transphobia in Sport

The Center for Sport and Social Justice (CSSJ) recognizes the significant cultural impact of sport, and values the transformative potential of sport and physical activity experiences across the lifespan. In line with our mission to promote inclusion and social justice in sport and physical activity, the CSSJ opposes all forms of transphobia and unequivocally supports the right of all individuals to participate in sport and physical activity spaces in ways that align with their gender identity and expression.

We are alarmed by the rise of anti-trans and non-binary legislation in the United States, and concerned about the effect these intolerant policies have on our sporting culture. Trans and non-binary youth are especially vulnerable, and should be provided with sport and physical activity spaces that are affirming and accepting of their authentic self-expression.  Educators, parents, activists, coaches, and community members must all bear responsibility for creating sport environments in which LGBTQIA+ youth can thrive while enjoying the social and physical benefits that sport participation can bring.
