The program’s emphasis is on providing students with a wide range of practical methods for enhancing the lives of individuals with exceptional needs through research based instruction in inclusive settings. The coursework is taught by successful researchers and practitioners in the field. The programs provide extensive supervised fieldwork in settings that are appropriate to each student’s professional goals.

The goal of the Special Educational Programs is to prepare specialists for a wide range of educational responsibilities to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families. The preparation program is consistent with the national trend toward integrated community living, research based inclusive schooling and individualized learning opportunities for all students. In addition to demonstrating a high level of teaching competence, Special Education specialists are expected to serve as change agents within their school districts, advocates for individuals with whom they work, and consultants and collaborators with other school personnel. The Master’s Degree Program also serves candidates with specialties in such programs as Art, Music, Speech, Physical Education, and Human Development.
