M.A. in English
English Department Office: MB 2579
The Department of English at California State University, East Bay offers an M.A. degree in English primarily focused upon British and American literature. With approval of specific department advisors in these areas, students may add a secondary concentration in Composition Studies or Creative Writing by taking appropriate course work.
Students come into the English M.A. program with a variety of backgrounds and objectives, but they share a love of literature, language, and writing. They find here a community of teachers and scholars, as well as stimulating classes that prepare them for a wide variety of careers.
The Department of English has a diverse group of faculty members, who take pride in their scholarship, creative work, and teaching. Graduate classes in the program are small, with approximately twenty students, so instructors are able to work individually with their students.
Students in the English M.A. program can also gain experience in publishing by working on the literary magazine, Arroyo, as well as in composition teaching by participating in the Graduate Teaching Associate Program.
In recent years our graduate students have presented scholarly papers at a variety of professional conferences. Some graduates have published their scholarly and creative work, while others have won prizes for their fiction and poetry. Many of our graduates have taken responsible positions in community college teaching, publishing, government, and business, while others have gone to further education in literature and language studies, law, and business.
