Course Information
Since students’ backgrounds and major degree programs are so different, they should seek advice from PHAP to determine those courses which will meet the prerequisites of the professional program to which they wish to apply. Most professional programs do not require that you choose a particular major and you are generally free to choose any major like Biology, Biochemistry, Health Science, Art, Computer Science, English, etc. as long as you fulfill the prerequisite science and mathematics courses required by that professional school. Departments within the College of Science particularly Biology, Biochemistry and Health Science offer options that may be used to satisfy prerequisites for admission to professional health schools. Before registration in any courses, it is imperative that students consult with a preprofessional advisor to be sure that the course(s) will meet admission requirements of the professional schools. Students should also consult with their academic advisors in their major department about meeting degree requirements. The courses listed below in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics and Mathematics are useful only as a guide of the typical prerequisite courses required by most health professional schools in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry and veterinary science. Students should not take these classes as listed as some may not be required by a particular school. For instance, most medical schools do not recommend anatomy and physiology courses (Biol. 2010/20) while dental schools and pharmacy schools do. Some schools only require two organic chemistry courses, or only two physics courses, or only one biochemistry course while others do not require calculus.
