Scott  H.  Hopkins, MFA

Professor

Department of Art

Growing up in Chula Vista, California, 5 miles north of Tijuana, Baja California was to  live in a diverse and transnational culture. I speak four languages badly, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and English. After many years and many jobs including three years teaching English as a second language in Japan and Taiwan, I returned to San Francisco and San Francisco City College where I received a scholarship to the San Francisco Art Institute, a private art college with only 800 students, all art majors. I try to bring the same quality, creativity, and intensity to my classes at CSU East Bay. While at SFAI, I did a double major and received a BFA in photography and painting in 1994. Accepted into the three year MFA program at the University of Arizona, I graduated with honors with an MFA in photography in 1997. After graduation, I had a three year artist residency at the Fire Station Artist Studios in Dublin, Ireland, during which time, I engaged with professional artists across disciplines, taught photography at Dublin City University, had a solo exhibition at the Gallery of Photography, an art commission in Northern Ireland, along with many other professional activities. I returned to the United States to be a visiting professor of photography at the University of Houston for 2000-2001, and then received my current position in the Art Department at CSU East Bay in Fall 2001 where I head the photography option. My art practice bridges both film, digital, and video. My photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally and I am currently making video documentaries along with still photographs for publication and exhibition.

In the nineteen years that I have taught at CSU East Bay, I have helped 17 students go on to graduate school. Many of my former students have gone on to professional success including one who did a magazine cover for Sports Illustrated in 2015 and another who is now the staff photographer for CSU East Bay, and his images are on billboards, busses and can be seen in the CSU East Bay magazine.

Photographing the imaginary lines of nationalism/tribalism as they are imposed on physical landscapes. Fine art and documentary photography, both still and video on issues of social justice.
