José A. López is the Director of the CSUEB Doctor of Education degree program, Educational Leadership for Social Justice. He has been a faculty member of the Dept. of Educational Leadership since 1994.  He has served as Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership on three occasions most recently until June 2008.

Prior to his employment at CSUEB, he was a public school administrator in Texas.  He served in five school districts as teacher, assistant principal, principal, director, area and assistant superintendent and eventually superintendent of schools.

He is a native of Laredo, Texas and is married.  He has three children and three grandchildren.

Professional Focus

My current research explores the development of leadership for equity in public school.  The low levels of achievement and high rates of dropout for poor kids and students of color in California schools call for a new form of courageous leadership.
