California State University Eastbay is the University of Possibilities where we’ve launched a new vision to become a leader in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), provide a cradle to career pipeline for students in the region, expand existing technology available for students while continuing programs that make Cal State East Bay a “Best in The West” University.

We are launching a new w-newsletter to communicate with you and the larger Concord Campus Community about the people, events and initiatives of the campus.  It will build on the CSUEB newsletter with an additional focus on the Concord Campus.  This inaugural issue highlights our commitment to Contra Costa County and the East Bay.  We’ll journey through 30 years of our history in Concord, honor businessman and philanthropist Mr. Sil Garaventa Jr. and announce our newest Executive Director Leadership Scholarship recipients.  This is your invitation to share with us in the celebration of Cal State East Bay’s Concord Campus.

In 1981, Cal State Hayward’s Contra Costa Campus opened its doors at the site of the Pleasant Hill High School.  At that time we offered a few programs catering only to adult students.  2011 is the 30 year anniversary of the Concord Campus.  We are the only four year public University in Contra Costa County proudly offering undergraduate, graduate and credential programs.  We’ve expanded since 1981 offering freshman pre-nursing and health sciences classes in addition to upper level degree programs and continuing our partnerships to help build the local workforce in the Contra Costa Community.

Positioning for growth and expansion

In 2009, we launched the University of Possibilities fundraising campaign to subsidize the bold new direction of CSUEB; including a vision of a global university with student support, state of the art facilities and innovative community partnerships that attract the best and brightest to our University.     Through generous support we have received commitments of over 8 million dollars and recently received a Bayer USA foundation grant to build a STEM education center in Hayward and more scholarship support in Concord.

But we’re not stopping there.  By partnering with local school districts and community partners CSUEB is creating a pipeline for students from Cradle to Career.   This includes innovative partnerships with K-12 school districts in Antioch and Mt. Diablo, continuing our longstanding teacher training conferences for new and experienced teachers, expanding student life on our Concord Campus and preparing students for careers in healthcare through an academically rich programs and partnerships with community

While the last two years have been a difficult for many of us due to the impact of the state budget on our campus they have also brought changes that I know will add to the positive climate of the Concord Campus.   We have a remodeled bookstore, an updated student café and lounge, student clubs, Concord Campus Student Ambassadors and O-Team leadership groups and a Program Coordinator to coordinate the increase in student life and ASI activities for Concord Campus Students.

We’ve made strides from our humble beginnings at the old Pleasant Hill High School and by partnering with you we plan to do much more.  Join with us on this journey at Cal State East Bay and the Concord Campus.  It’s Your University, Our University and the University of Possibilities
