Manna from D.C.: Hard-pressed City College of San Francisco, along with a number of other community colleges and universities in the Bay Area, are getting a share of $500 million in nationwide grants from the U.S. Department of Labor for workforce training programs.

The grants are part of the Obama administration's Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative, which seeks to teach skills and develop employment opportunities in advanced manufacturing, logistics, health care and other fields through public-private partnerships.

City College is part of a consortium with Southern California community colleges in line to received $15 million. A separate $15 million is being designated for programs at community colleges in the East Bay, including Laney College, Diablo Valley College and Ohlone College, as well as UC Berkeley and CSU East Bay.
