Chicago White Sox select CSUEB's Charlie Sharrer in MLB draft

Cal State East Bay senior pitcher-outfielder Charlie Sharrer was picked in the 26th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday. The Chicago White Sox drafted the Pioneer senior as a pitcher, making him the 738th overall pick. A four-year starter at Cal State East Bay, Sharrer is the first Pioneer baseball player to be drafted since Devin Grigg in 2010.

“Charlie had a great four years at East Bay,” said CSUEB head coach Bob Ralston. “He's an excellent hitter with a outstanding arm. It's great that Chicago sees the potential of utilizing Charlie as a pitcher. We wish him the best in his career with the White Sox organization.”

Sharrer finished completed an impressive career with a standout 2013 season. He helped the team reach a No. 22 national ranking in March and tie the school record with 32 wins for the year. He was a second-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association and first-team Daktronics All-NCAA West Region selection. For the season, Sharrer hit .333 and led the team in home runs (4) and slugging (.519). As a pitcher, he led the Pioneers with four saves and posted a 3.66 ERA in 13 appearances.

The native of Palmdale, Calif. was named CCAA, West Region, and National Player of the Week for Mar. 18-24. He finished his career ranked second all-time in Pioneer history with 185 hits and 50 doubles. He's sixth in school history with 95 career RBI, seventh with 99 runs scored, and 10th with 16 career home runs.

A total of eight CCAA players were selected in the 2013 MLB first-year player draft that took place beginning June 6 in New York.
