  • July 21, 2010 1:00pm

The Community Services Division of Hayward City Hall is hosting a professional development session for local nonprofit agencies Monday, July 26. Mary D'Alleva, director of Cal State East Bay's Service Learning program, will open the event and speak about service learning at about 8:30 a.m.

According to D'Alleva, service learning is a teaching method that combines service to the community with classroom curriculum. The CSUEB Service Learning program provides a hands-on approach for students to master subject materials while fostering civic responsibility.

Speaking with D'Alleva will be Merith Weisman, coordinator of the Center for Community Engagement at Sonoma State University, and George R. Moskoff, founder of the Minerva Project, which brings together nonprofit organizations needing assistance with consultants who have specialized knoweldge and skills. Consultants provide their services on a pro bono basis and sharpen their skills while the nonprofit organizations benefit from the work of those consultants. D'Alleva will be working with Moskoff to bring the Minerva Project to the East Bay.
