Nine months before Rose Parks made news, a girl by the name of Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus to a white person. In 1955 refusing to yield your seat to a white person was in violation of state law.

Colvin was arrested and was one of four plaintiffs in the pioneering Browder v. Gayle case, which ended segregation on Montgomery public buses.

Women's Studies Lecturer Ericka Huggins will moderate a discussion with Colvin on Monday, Feb 7 at 12pm in the MPR of the New University. Admission is free. Event is sponsored by ASI.
