Public Affairs and Administration graduate student Lori Moore has been named a semifinalist in the Class of 2011 Presidential Management Fellows Program run by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

The program is an opportunity for graduate students to find federal agency employment and start a public service career.

Only 1,530 semifinalists were selected from more than 9,100 applicants nationwide. They were chosen based on university nominations, resume, writing sample essays and assessment tests.

The field will be narrowed to a group of finalists based on the results of the in-person assessment tests. The finalists will be invited to attend a federal agency job fair in Washington, D.C. in mid-April where they have the possibility at a two-year fellowship.

Moore, 51, hopes to pursue a career in public service after receiving her master's in public administration (public management and public human resources management) in June.

"We in the Department of Public Affairs and Administration (PUAD) are very proud that Lori Moore has been selected as a semi-finalist in the Presidential Management Internship Program,” said Toni Fogarty, associate professor and chair of PUAD.

“The MPA program has a good history of having students selected as both semi-finalists and finalists in this highly competitive and prestigious program, and we are very happy to see yet another MPA student considered for membership.  We hope that Ms. Moore will be selected as a finalist, but being selected as a semi-finalist is a great accomplishment for her and an honor for the MPA program,” said Fogarty.

More than 20 years ago Moore gave up on college after only one term. Then, in 2003, after years in high-tech and manufacturing, she realized her lack of an education had put her at a dead end. Back in the classroom, she was academically motivated, and excelled.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from CSUEB in liberal studies, with a minor in business administration, in 2007 while juggling single-parenthood and various jobs. In no time, she was enrolled in the PUAD master’s program, following a dream to open a clinic in a traditionally underrepresented community and offer free counseling and education financial aid to encourage education among all.
