CSUEB grad Al Carlos Hernandez grew up in the housing projects in San Francisco and said he never really fit in.  He said in a recent interview with La Prensa San Diego that he was “never quite Latino enough or gringo enough…”  His parents never spoke Spanish at home because they wanted him to learn English, something for which he is now grateful. While at then Cal State Hayward, Hernandez became the first Latino editor of the campus newspaper, overseeing a staff of 35, and played soccer for the Pioneers.   He was also the first Latino to graduate as a mass communications grad.  Last summer, he earned his doctorate of humane letters.

After graduating from CSUEB, he worked as the on air host and producer of a weekly radio talk show on KFRC in San Francisco, Program Director of KBRG fm, and the west coast regional editor for the first national Latino magazine, Nuestro.

Today, Hernandez is the west coast editor of Herald De Paris online newspaper with estimated 11 million hits a day, contributing editor with Latinola.com of Los Angeles, consulting editor for www.soulradionline.com, and a featured columnist for San Diego’s largest bilingual Newspaper, La Prensa. He is also an adjunct professor at an Oakland university.
