Dawn Ellerbe, assistant athletics director for Cal State East Bay, was one of 50 applicants selected to attend the 2011 NCAA Leadership Institution in Boston.

The program, held July 9-15, assisted ethnic minority male and females in strategically mapping and planning their careers through the exploration of the intercollegiate athletics community. The workshop was held on the Northeastern University, with additional site visits and interviews at Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Brown University, Smith College, University of Massachusetts, Boston, and Boston College. The visits exposed participants to key stakeholders within college administration where they received an in-depth view of the opportunities to serve within the NCAA governance structure as they advance in their careers.

"Athletics is a proven avenue that builds bridges not only across campus but from campus to the greater community," said Ellerbe. "I am driven in this career pursuit because of the opportunities intercollegiate athletics afforded me as a student-athlete. The lessons of team work, tolerance and perseverance, stay with me."

Ellerbe was a student athlete at the University of South Carolina and a four-time NCAA champion and American collegiate record holder in the hammer. She competed in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia placing 7th. Ellerbe worked in college athletics for nine years at the University of South Carolina. She joined Cal State East Bay as Assistant Athletics Director of Marketing and Promotions in 2009.

Way to go, Dawn!
