Cal State East Bay will be closed today in observance of Veterans Day. We honor the military veterans who are alumni, current students, faculty and staff and we especially those in the CSUEB family who died in the service of our country.

In lieu of our daily blog story, we have summarized all recent stories related to CSUEB student veterans. We encourage the CSUEB community to post their thoughts and appreciation to our student veterans by posting on their Facebook page.

CSUEB admissions officials have noted a nearly 60 percent jump in the numbers of veterans enrolling at Cal State East Bay, a trend they primarily attribute to changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. NEW GI BILL BRINGS MORE VETERAN STUDENTS TO CSUEB story.

CSUEB business student Nicholas Roberts did three tours as a Marine in Iraq.  Angelo Garza served in Iraq with the Army and is now working on a degree for a career in law enforcement.  Both were interviewed by KGO ABC-7 for their story on “GI Bill helping veterans' get educational opportunities.” GI Bill helping veterans' get educational opportunities story.

Did you know that CSUEB student Jeremy Profitt is on a personal mission to clear up misconceptions about PTSD? He served in the army in both Afghanistan and Iraq and came back with the illness. CSUEB STUDENT VETERAN HAS NEW MISSION: BATTLING MISCONCEPTION OF PTSD story.

CSUEB Assistant Professor Marc Jacobs write the “Iago Syndrome” about four soldiers returning to Fort Bragg from active duty in Afghanistan. His work opened our 2009 theatre season. 'IAGO SYNDROME' DRAWS 'OTHELLO' COMPARISON TO VIOLENCE story.

Mindy Kimball ’05 is a major in the U.S. Army with expertise in satellite communications systems. Her work on global climate change was profiled in Cal State East Bay magazine. 

Tim Smith, B.A., Political Science (‘73), is the president and chief executive of San Diego Travel Group. He was formerly a manger at Pacific Southwest Airlines. He also served as a soldier in Vietnam, later becoming a drill instructor at Fort Ord, the former Army Post in Monterey Bay.  "Class Notes" in the spring issue of Cal State East Bay magazine (PDF).

Cal State East Bay alumna Linda Foster Arden published Letters from the Storm: The Intimate Civil War Letters of Lt. J.A.H. Foster, 155th Pennsylvania Volunteers (2010 Mechling Bookbindery) about her great-great grandparents, Mary Jane Strain and John Alexander Hastings Foster. 

CSUEB alumnus Rich Stowell wrote about his experience as a new Army recruit in, Nine Weeks: a teacher's education in Army Basic Training.

Cal State East Bay softball team raised money for Give2theTroops, a nonprofit charity organization which sends letters and care packages to America's armed forces in combat zones around the world.

The Veteran Office at CSUEB provides services to students applying for veteran benefits (VA education assistance programs). If you plan to use an educational benefit at CSUEB, meet with the Veteran Affairs Coordinator to review the requirements of the program and ensure the appropriate paperwork is completed.
