CSUEB Educational Psychology Assistant Professor Oanh Tran participated on a “Fostering Civility in Youth” panel October 27 at Southern Oregon University (SOU) as part of the school’s 2011-2012 theme on civility. Each year, the SOU Arts and Humanities Council selects a thematic focus for the year then coordinates courses and public events related to the theme.

Tran and her colleagues debated why fostering civility is an important goal for positive youth development. They discussed developmental and contextual factors influencing civility, how schools and universities can promote and strengthen civility among youth, and the role of civility in terms of mental health and optimal youth development. “Civility is associated with pro-social attitudes and behaviors, sensitivity to the needs and perspectives of others, and a greater sense of responsibility,” said the program poster (PDF).

SOU chose “civility” because while healthy debate and disagreement are at the heart of a vibrant democracy, contemporary society seems to be marked by an increasing incivility.
