Mary Robinson, who served as president of Ireland (1990–97) and as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR; 1997–2002), will speak at Cal State East Bay at 6 p.m. Monday, April 8, in the University Union’s multipurpose room. The event is free and open to the public.

Described as a passionate, forceful advocate for gender equality, women’s participation in peace-building and human dignity, Robinson will speak on “Making Human Rights the Compass for All Ethical Globalization.”

She is famously guarded about giving advice. In her interview with Vanity Fair, Robinson did part with one piece of advice—one that “goes for any president or leader: Unless you surround yourself with people who tell you the truth, you’re foolish.”

Robinson’s visit is sponsored by Associated Students, Inc. Visit the event Facebook page for more information.
