Rafael Hernandez, interim associate dean for the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS) since September of 2012, has been appointed to the permanent position, CLASS Dean Kathleen Rountree has announced.

Since joining the California State University, East Bay faculty in 2005, Hernandez has served the college in a variety of capacities, including chair of the Music Department, director of the Multimedia Graduate program and associate professor of music.

Hernandez will have responsibilities within CLASS that include enrollment management, staff and faculty personnel issues and special projects, as well as maintaining a close working relationship with department chairs for the planning of all course offerings each quarter.

“Dr. Hernandez brings tremendous skills and abilities in planning and analysis which, coupled with a deep dedication to faculty and students, will greatly assist the college in planning and implementing new initiatives,” Rountree said. “His experience makes him adept at managing our immense inventory of courses and degrees in the way that best serves the 4,500 majors of the college, and the thousands more who take classes in the college each year.

“He is highly respected by his colleagues, and I am delighted to welcome him to the position of associate dean in an ongoing capacity,” Rountree added.

Hernandez was appointed by CSUEB President Leroy M. Morishita following a search process conducted by a committee of CLASS faculty and staff headed by Linda Ivey, chair of the History Department.

A composer by discipline, Hernandez earned a bachelor of music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1998, a master’s of music from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001, and a doctor of music in composition from Indiana University in 2005.

His music has been performed in a number of venues throughout the United States. He is president of Composers Inc., a nonprofit music presentation organization focused on new American music. Hernandez is the author of musical and technological materials that include software that is used by music educators throughout the United States, Europe and Australia.
