Join social media consultant Suse Barnes to learn how you can protect yourself and your organization from a potential communications crisis when using social media to market your business. Barnes will teach a three-night course beginning March 3 at Cal State East Bay’s Oakland Center – Reputation Management, Crisis Communication, and Legal Issues of Social Media. The course is part of CSUEB’s new Social Media Marketing Certificate program.

As a recent FindLaw article points out, “Social-networking users don't enjoy any of the immunities granted to social-networking sites under the law, so they should be careful to always act appropriately when posting messages or files to the sites.”

Through discussions and interactive activities, students will learn to recognize the landmines of social media marketing, and how to avoid them.

During the course, Barnes will address best practices for social media governance, brand reputation management, regulatory compliance, and crisis communications, preparedness and response. Participants will learn how to prepare for and respond to a communications crisis in social media, in addition to developing social media guidelines and policies for their own business or employer.

Barnes is a search and social marketing consultant with 14 years of experience in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has been optimizing websites for search engines since before Google was invented. Barnes is also the president and founder of Susby Internet Solutions (Susby Digital), a digital marketing consultancy specializing in web, search, and social media, with an emphasis on marketing and a foundation in technology.
