Students Find Success at Cal State East Bay's Concord Campus

  • June 8, 2015 12:00am

The demand for diverse graduates from Cal State East Bay’s Concord campus is on the rise — a demand that can be credited to Concord’s ongoing goal of meeting and nurturing the educational needs of the people of Contra Costa County and the surrounding area.

Student Carl De La Cruz, originally from the Philippines, graduated from the nursing program at Concord in December 2014. He managed to secure a full-time position within days of his commencement, an achievement he attributes to being a CSUEB Concord student. He felt CSUEB Concord set him up for success in the interview process, in particular.

“I strongly believe that it made me stand out as the top candidate for the position,” De La Cruz said.

De La Cruz also said that students can graduate from Concord feeling confident in their knowledge and their ability to succeed in whatever field they choose.

Cal State East Bay Concord offers degree completion programs in psychology, sociology, liberal studies and business administration, with options in corporate management and marketing management. The core courses for criminal justice administration are available at Concord, as well as single and multiple subject teaching credential programs.

Cal State East Bay’s Concord campus also has a high percentage of nursing students, and offers programs to both first-time freshmen matriculating directly from high school and to transfer students like De La Cruz, who complete their prerequisite health science modules at an area community college. The Concord campus continues to foster strong links with regional community colleges such as Diablo Valley, Los Medanos, Contra Costa and Solano.

Transfer students to Concord note the seamless transition from community college. Sociology majors Tiffany Patterson and Renee Washington recently transferred from Los Medanos College in Pittsburg.

“The Concord campus makes coming to school easy, so that I can focus on my education,” Patterson said.

Washington added that the staff at Concord is very family oriented.

Cal State East Bay’s Concord campus provides a wide range of student services, including academic advising, career counseling, student health services and advice on financial aid. A free student shuttle service also runs day and evening between the campus and the Concord BART station.
