A variety of campus historical images-many of which have never before been on display for the public-will be exhibited. Many have been restored and placed on several vertical panels to chronicle key events and challenges the university faced over the past half-century. Additionally, new historical images will be added during the course of the year.
The exhibit also showcases milestones in the changing role of the University Library, from offering a locally-held print-based collection, to serving as an information gateway of multi-media digital resources from throughout the world.
"Images from the University Archives give proof of how and why the library is no longer a quiet study space, but a vibrant collaborative space, where students learn from their peers," said University Librarian Myoung-Ja Kwon. "The exhibit also demonstrates how the library has made use of emerging technologies to efficiently deliver services to CSUEB students."
The main exhibit greets visitors at the front doors of the University Library on the Hayward campus, located at 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. Other related artifacts and images will be displayed throughout the building.
Another key part of this show, to be updated throughout the year, is the new University Archives Web site, which can be found online at http://www.library.csueastbay.edu/archives/.
"Other items, such as old school catalogs and brochures and filmed documentaries showing interviews with former CSUEB administrators, will be available for viewing on the Web site," said Richard Apple, coordinator of the library's archives and special exhibits. "It includes film footage of Cal State East Bay's first basketball team in action, circa 1961." Apple produced the 50th anniversary celebration exhibit and the accompanying Web site.
Apple said that library patrons-as well as CSUEB faculty, students, and staff-are encouraged to add their own recollections and memorabilia as the year progresses, "making it a living history of the university," Apple said.
The exhibit is open for viewing during regular fall, winter and spring quarter hours of the University Library: Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday 8 a.m. to 5p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
