Dorothy AllisonDorothy Allison, author of the best selling book, "Bastard Out of Carolina," will be the next presenter in the California State University, East Bay Distinguished Writers Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15.
Allison's presentation will take place in the New University Union Multipurpose Room A on CSUEB's Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. The university community and the general public are invited. Admission is free.
Her reading is sponsored by Cal State East Bay's Department of English, in conjunction with the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. Light refreshments and a book signing will follow.
"Dorothy Allison is a major American writer whose stunning portraits of the often neglected in our literature have moved and inspired readers and writers alike," said Steve Gutierrez, director of the Writers Series and a professor of English.
The largely autobiographical "Bastard," published in 1993, went on to be made into a 1996 movie directed by Anjelica Huston and starring Jennifer Jason Leigh. In 2007 Allison's work was recognized with a Robert Penn Warren Award for Fiction. Her earlier books are "Trash -- Short Stories," (1988) which won two Lambda Literary Awards and the American Library Association Prize for Lesbian/Gay Writing; "The Women Who Hate Me," chapbook of poetry (1983); and editorial work for "Quest," "Conditions," and "Outlook," all early feminist, lesbian and gay journals.
Born in 1949 to a poor, unmarried 15-year-old, Allison fought her way through a childhood that included incest, poverty and family violence. She describes herself as a feminist and working class storyteller who writes to change the world. Her writing topics include gender, class, violence and sexual orientation. Allison, her partner, and adopted son reside in the Bay Area.
