In 2013, the Princeton Review selected Cal State East Bay as a "Best in the West" college for 2014 for the tenth consecutive year. The report is based on surveys of current students, who noted the following highlights:

In 2008, Cal State East Bay was recognized as a "top–tier" institution among master's–granting universities in the West by the U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges" guide. In the 2009 guide, Cal State East Bay was noted for its exceptionally diverse student body, ranking as the second-most diverse master's-granting university in the Western region.

The Best Colleges selected Cal State East Bay's Online Bachelor of Business Administration Degree program as No. 6 in the nation for 2011-12, calling it "an excellent value."
Diverse: Issues Top 100 Undergraduate Degree Producers
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education recognized Cal State East Bay's undergraduate program as No. 61 in the nation in 2012 for the number of degrees awarded to students of color. The graduate program is also included the publication's Top 100.
Top 25 Online Colleges and Universities 2013
Cal State East Bay was ranked among the top 25 online colleges and universities in the Online College Rankings report by SR Education Group's flagship site, Guide to Online Schools. To be considered for the rankings, a school must offer at least 10 baccalaureate or advanced programs that can be completed online and be nationally or regionally accredited.
Freshman Learning Communities – A National Model
Studies by the Lumina Foundation and Syracuse University have recognized Cal State East Bay’s Freshman Learning Communities as a national model. These communities allow incoming freshmen to begin the college experience with other students who share interests and career objectives. Freshmen select a subject area of clustered courses and are placed with peers who have similar interests. The Freshman Learning Communities program offers guaranteed courses needed to meet major prerequisites and graduation requirements. Courses are grouped thematically in the Humanities, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences.
This innovative program helps students to:
- earn higher GPAs
- develop superior writing and communication skills
- graduate reliably in four years.
All students receive individualized instruction in a small class setting, supported by peer and faculty advising, counseling, and mentoring.
