Office of the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs

The responsibility of the Office of the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs is to advance University’s mission by facilitating students’ knowledge, understanding, and utilization of University systems and resources, working collaboratively to enhance the enrichment of the overall student experience throughout the learning continuum. Work is accomplished through strategic alignment, both internally and in concert with other University departments. The office’s efforts affirm the value and contributions of each individual, and the AVP harbors democracy, civility, trust, and diversity as paramount to PEMSA’s work to effect positive change.

The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs serves as a liaison between students, parents, faculty, staff and administrators to help resolve problems, assist with individual or group crisis management, early identification and response to negative student behavior, navigate various campus procedures, and serve as an advocate for students when needed. The Associate Vice President also serves as a liaison with other University offices that provide non-academic or co-curricular programming and services for students, including Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) advising, counseling, the health center, housing, athletics, accessibility services, and the University Police Department. The office additionally provides an important link to targeted regional community segments through early outreach efforts and programs designed to increase the community’s college-going knowledge. 

Success is measured by the overall smoothness of Student Affairs units, in high student satisfaction, in recognized excellence of SA programs, in leadership achievement of students and with community participation in university outreach efforts. 

ASI, Inc.

Associated Students, Incorporated, prioritizes students’ needs, and authentically advocates for them through lobbying and non-violent demonstrations at the federal, state, system, and campus level while ensuring students opinions are objectively heard and thoroughly considered in every decision affecting them. Associated Students, Incorporated, also provides significant services, funding, and intellectually diverse programs and facilities that improve the holistic educational experience enabling students to be successful.

Student Development and Judicial Affairs

The responsibility of the Office of Student Development and Judicial Affairs (OSDJA) at California State University East Bay is to address student behavior issues, in a direct and developmental manner to facilitate student success as well as ensure a safe and comfortable campus environment and to provide assistance to all members of the campus community in appropriate circumstances.

The clients of this office are all members of the campus community, including students, staff, and faculty. Advice and assistance regarding various issues including student conduct and ethical matters are rendered to staff and faculty, while students receive developmental and educational advice and sanctions to facilitate and encourage respect for the campus community.

The effectiveness of sanctions and advice rendered can be seen in the low rate of repeat offenders, and the success of students who have visited the OSDJA and have continued at Cal State East Bay, ultimately graduating, as well as in the continuing ongoing relationship between the OSDJA and numerous members of the campus community who continually seek assistance from the OSDJA.

Student Life and Leadership Programs

Student Life and Leadership Programs provides opportunities for student learning beyond the classroom and enhances the mission of the university through the coordination and support of a variety of special programs that promote campus life, leadership, and community engagement. Special programs include orientation for new students and families; the recognition and development of student clubs and organizations; leadership conferences, seminars and workshops; and campus wide programs and events
