Federal Work Study Information

Eligible Federal Work Study (FWS) students may earn their FWS award ON campus in departments and offices, or OFF campus at selected nonprofit organizations and public agencies that have already completed contracts before the fiscal year begins. Students who are eligible for this financial aid type and are selected by our technical systems, will find an 'eHAF' or FWS Hiring Authorization Form in their student Horizon email account. The eHAF is generally available very close to the beginning of the new term (e.g. July 1 for Summer Quarter; October 1 for Fall Quarter, etc).

Eligible FWS students who find their FWS Hiring Authorization Form in their Horizon email account, should PRINT the entire message as often as needed – as this email message is the document future employers will be asking you for in order to interview with them and/or to finalize a FWS job offer and appointment. Our offsite employers and selected on campus employers are also part of our FWS ‘community service’ program. Community service positions involve work which is in the public interest, and are designated to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low income individuals, or to solve problems related to their needs. Eligible students accepting community service positions will automatically be considered for an increase in their FWS award after their employers submit the appropriate paperwork to the Office of Financial Aid, funds permitting. Employers and students will find additional information on this program by referring to the links at the end of this web page below.

ON-Campus Federal Work Study Employment Opportunities

Eligible Federal Work Study students may use their FWS award in over 135 department and administrative state offices on campus where there is a great need for additional support in reception areas, computer labs, stocking and inventory tasks, data entry jobs, filing/phone work, delivery jobs, etc. Students must PRINT their FWS Hiring Authorization Form (or eHAF) in order to secure employment on campus. The hiring form is your ticket or proof to employers that you are an eligible FWS student and able to go to work. Additionally, new students must sign in at the Payroll Office on the second floor of the new student services building before starting to work.

Not all job announcements are posted online, so feel free to inquire at any department or office that looks of interest to you. Be prepared to discuss your job skills and time availability, and bring your resume if you have one. If a department or employer agrees to hire you, they will request your Hiring Form (or eHAF) and need to submit a Job Description indicating the tasks that you will be performing. Students who do not secure a position early in the year or quarter in which they have been awarded might discover at a later date that their FWS award has been reduced or canceled entirely by our systems. Students should plan on working their scheduled hours as negotiated with their on campus employer, and not over earn their FWS award or allocation as posted on MyCSUEB. Click on the View Financial Aid link from your MyCSUEB account to verify your current FWS award at any time 24/7/365, and inform your supervisor if there are any changes to your FWS AWARD.

OFF-Campus Federal Work Study Employment Opportunities

Eligible Federal Work Study students may use their FWS award with pre-approved off site and community service employers. Special written agreements must be in place each year before an off campus employer is designated to be an approved site. Students must PRINT their FWS Hiring Authorization Form (or eHAF) from their student Horizon email account in order to secure employment with any of these off campus employers.

FWS Job descriptions for approved OFF campus sites are also posted online through the Academic Advising and Career Education (AACE) CBay system. Students may NOT use their FWS award at off campus sites other than those posted each year, and NO additional off campus sites will be considered after the year has started. FWS students will automatically be considered for an increase in their FWS award after these community service employers officially hire and submit the appointment documents for their applicable community service positions to the FWS Administrator at CSUEB, funds permitting.
