A computer is a fine tuned piece of machinery that needs occasional maintenance and fine tuning. There are always new viruses, glitches, or problems that have solutions. Here are some things you should do to keep your computer in tip-top shape.
Windows Users
Checking for Windows Updates and Upgrades
- Open your Microsoft Internet Explorer Web Browser
- Choose the tools pull down menu and select WINDOWS UPDATE, or click here
- Click SCAN FOR UPDATES, accept the security window if it comes up
- After scan choose review and install updates, restart computer if necessary.
- Repeat process verify that your Windows Operating System has been fully updated.
Automatically Updating Windows
If you have Windows XP you can have Windows check for updates whenever you go online.
MAC Users
Updating Your MAC
- You must first be connected to the Internet
- Quit open applications, which are marked in the Dock with a small triangle You cannot quit the Finder
- Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu
- Click the Software Update icon
- Click Check Now
- Follow directions to install updates, if necessary
Is Your MAC Safe?
Using an Apple computer does not mean your computer is safe. The MAC Operating System is susceptible to viruses, AdWare, and SpyWare. It is important that your computer is equipped with the latest anti-virus and firewall protection. Apple computer recommends Norton Anti-virus for Macintosh and Virex from McAfee.
Automatically Updating your Anti–virus
Every Anti-virus program is different. Many will automatically update your anti-virus every time you are online. You can also choose a time that you are normally online for daily or weekly updates and scans.
