Adaptive Furniture

Under applicable disability rights laws, some disabilities require the University to provide and properly position Adaptive Furniture in a student's various classes. Students with back or skeletal disabilities, or who have other documented disabilities can qualify for this accommodation. Adaptive Furniture is generally a specially outfitted desk and chair arrangement that has special features which allow it to be customized to the accommodation needs of a particular student with a disability. Each University classroom has been outfitted with one set of Adaptive Furniture in it. PLEASE, never remove or reassign this Adaptive Furniture to any other location!

General Rules

Any tampering of (i.e. moving or removing) Adaptive Furniture is subject to University Police investigation. If a student who does not have Adaptive Furniture as an accommodation or whose initials do not appear on SDRC's reserved sign refuses to allow an eligible student to use the furniture, that student is in violation of the Student Conduct Code and should be reported to Judicial Affairs. Unauthorized use of Adaptive Furniture will be treated as an illegal act (analogous to parking in a disabled-only parking space), and may be investigated by the University Police Department.

Although every lecture classroom on campus has been equipped with a standard set of Adaptive Furniture (consisting of an orange chair and adjustable table), further furniture may be required. This may consist of a chair with more padding, an adjustable chair, a wheelchair-accessible table, etc. Occasionally another set of Adaptive Furniture will need to be placed in the classroom if more than one SDRC-registered student requests the accommodation for the same course.

If a student is complaining that their furniture is not in the classroom, please have that student contact SDRC at (510) 885-3868.

The Classroom Instructor's Role

As the representative of the University, it is the on-site responsibility of the instructor to confirm that Adaptive Furniture is properly placed in their classroom if s/he is aware of the presence of an SDRC-registered student requiring the furniture during his/her class. Such furniture will be labeled as RESERVED by SDRC. This RESERVED label will indicate the student's initials and times the student will be using the Adaptive Furniture. Under both Federal and State laws, a student with an Adaptive Furniture accommodation and whose initials appear on the SDRC reserved sign has the sole right to use that furniture during the designated time.

How A Student Can Request Adaptive Furniture

It is the student's responsibility to request Adaptive Furniture through SDRC. This is done by completing and submitting an Accommodations Request Form to SDRC prior to the beginning of the quarter, and indicating on the form that Adaptive Furniture will be required. It may take 1-2 weeks for an Adaptive Furniture request to be fully processed. Therefore, SDRC encourages students to submit their requests well in advance of the beginning of the quarter (such as immediately after registration).

If an SDRC-registered student does not have Adaptive Furniture approved as an accommodation, s/he should speak to their counselor as soon as possible in order to request an accommodations review.

If any CSUEB student believes s/he has the need for Adaptive Furniture as a temporary or permanent accommodation, s/he should visit the SDRC office as soon as possible with medical documentation of the disability so an intake appointment can be made with a counselor. That counselor will then review the student's medical documentation and determine if Adaptive Furniture is appropriate.
