Frequently Asked Questions

1. When would I use Student Health Services (SHS)?

You may use SHS for health and wellness services, when you are ill or injured or when you are looking for health information. Because students pay a health fee as part of tuition, most services are free; some are low-cost.

2. Do I need health insurance to use Student Health Services?

No. To use the services, you need to be an eligible student and present your CSU East Bay ID. However, because we are closed in the evenings and on weekends, it is advisable to have personal health insurance in case of emergency or if you require care outside the scope of our services.

3. Does CSUEB offer student health insurance?

Yes. Student health insurance is available through Associated Students, Inc.

4. Are your doctors “real”?

Yes. SHS is staffed with fully licensed physicians and nurse practitioners.

5. Can I walk in and be seen by a doctor?

Appointments are required for doctor visits. A limited number of same day appointments are available each day. Call early at (510) 885-3735.

If you injure yourself or have an urgent medical situation, you may come in that day and be seen in our Urgent Care department.

6. Is everything confidential?

Yes. Your medical records are NOT tied to your academic record. We will not share information about you and your medical records without your written permission.

7. What should I bring with me to my appointment?

Bring your student ID, medical history, and a list of any medications/supplements/herbs you are taking.

8. What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash and personal checks. WE DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS.

9. Can I fill a prescription from a doctor from another facility at SHS?

Yes. You can bring your prescription to our Pharmacy.

10. I have an Immunization Hold on my record—what should I do?

You will need to show us proof that you have immunity to certain diseases, either through previous immunizations or infections. This requirement must be met BEFORE YOU REGISTER FOR YOUR SECOND QUARTER TERM. If you are unable to provide this documentation either through records or a blood test, you must be immunized. You can receive immunizations at SHS. For more information on immunization
