The Great California Shakeout Drill will take place on October 15, 2009 at 10:15 a.m. The University Police Department on behalf of California State University East Bay (CSUEB) would like to thank you in advance for your participation in this important drill. Preparedness is one of the most important aspects to minimizing damage during an earthquake or other disaster.
On October 21, 1868, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck along the Hayward Fault and was one of the most destructive in California’s history. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists describe this fault as due anytime for another magnitude 6.8 to 7.0 earthquake. Two factors make the Hayward Fault one of the most dangerous faults in the US. First, the Hayward Fault is the most urbanized earthquake fault in the US and second, it averages a major earthquake every 138 years, so due to the fact it has been 141 years, experts believe the fault is due for a major earthquake.
The most recent major earthquake in the Bay Area was Loma Prieta peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains on October 17, 1989 and it was a 6.9 magnitude. These are just two examples of local earthquakes that demonstrate the importance of this Shakeout drill at CSUEB.
Remember, during an earthquake, Drop, Cover, and Hold On!
