The official logo of California State University, East Bay was developed by the University’s Integrated Marketing Communications Committee. The committee's objective was to create a mark less formal than the seal that would clearly communicate the University's new name and regional direction. Designs for the logo and seal were formally adopted by the University in April 2006.
The University logo is a contemporary wordmark-based graphic that displays the full institutional name in a stylized, distinctive, and unified design. Except for integrated but subtle graphic flourishes, the logo communicates the University's name clearly and boldly, without the use of any accompanying, abstract graphic symbols. The resulting design is highly scalable and thus appropriate and effective for a wide range of print and electronic applications.
Graphic Communications Attributes
The logo was designed to draw the viewer's eye first to the word "University," then to the words “East Bay,” and last, to “California State,” thus emphasizing the institution's equivalency and standing among peer universities. This logo combines a classic serif font to express the institution's foundational or root identity as part of the established California State University system together with a more contemporary sans serif font to communicate — and set apart — its unique, East Bay regional connection and identity. The logo is more contemporary and less formal than the seal. It communicates the University's vibrancy, relevance, and contemporaneousness as it reinvents, repositions, and renews itself and its academic offerings to meet the changing needs of the region it serves.
Logo Color Variations & Reproduction
The logo may be reproduced and displayed in two colors, with "California State University" and the horizontal line that underscores "University" in black, and the words "East Bay" in red (PMS 199 or C/0, M/100, Y/65, K/0) This version may only be displayed on a white, East Bay Olive, or East Bay Gold background. Alternately, the knock-out version of the logo — with "California State University" and the horizontal line that underscores "University" in white and the words "East Bay" in red (PMS 199 or C/0, M/100, Y/65, K/0) — may be displayed on a black, Bayview Blue, East Bay Bronze, East Bay Silver, Steel Blue, or Evergreen background.
The logo may also be displayed in 100% black, 100% red, or in gray as a 40% screen of black, on a white background only. The logo may also be foil embossed in black, white, or gold, or reproduced using metallic gold (PMS 872) ink.
The logo, when used alone, should never be reproduced smaller than three quarters of an inch in width.
Logo Display and Space Reservations
The logo should be displayed within an area free of other graphic or design elements and type that may compete with or distract from it. This area should be a minimum of the measurement of the height of the word "University" as displayed, projected from all edges of the logo. Exceptions include the use of either the horizontal or vertical signature mark, which use distinct, fixed spatial formulas.
The logo may be used as a primary institutional identifier on a wide range of University communications and publications. Because of its scalability, legibility, and clarity, it is also suitable for other applications including Web templates, advertising, indoor and outdoor directional signage, and basic business communications and forms. Use of the logo for casual applications including emblematic items (such as mugs, pens, key rings, athletic items) is also appropriate and encouraged. Applications that common sense suggests might in any way demean, disparage, or degrade the image and prestige of the institution are expressly forbidden.
- All printed and electronic University communications must include and display either the University logo or the signature mark as a primary institutional identifier.
- The logo may be used alone as the sole identifier on University communications.
- Use only one logo on any one surface of your layout, and never combine or display the logo with the seal or signature mark on the same page or surface. Exceptions to this logo usage rule are (1) when the signature mark, which combines the logo and seal in a fixed spatial relationship is used, by itself, and (2) when the seal is blind-embossed (no color) on a surface that also contains the logo.
- In general, all three CSUEB identity elements should not be used in the same document.
The California State University, East Bay logo is a trademark of the University, and its use for commercial or outside noncommercial uses purposes must be officially approved by the University’s licensing agent, the Office of University Communications. CSUEB Logo for Professional Print Production (EPS)
These graphic files are designed for professional design and printing projects. They are in EPS (Encapsulated Post Script) format saved down to Adobe Illustrator Version 10 for the PC and should only be handled by graphic designers, vendors, and other professionals familiar with EPS files. The files can be viewed and applied using advanced graphics software such as PageMaker, In-Design, Quark, and Photoshop.

These graphic files should be used for the Web only. Using these files for printed material will result in poor quality, low resolution reproductions.
