Emergency Guidelines for the Campus Community

This site is being developed and implemented as an information resource for the California State University, East Bay community. Although we cannot fully anticipate every emergency situation, we can offer some measure of comfort and confidence on our campus if we provide community members with pertinent and useful information. If you have questions or recommendations regarding this site or other law enforcement related issues please contact the University Police Department at (510) 885-3791.

Be Aware

One of the most important things you can do is to simply be aware of your environment and your surroundings. This means paying closer attention to where you are and how you might react if something happens.

You should know where emergency exits are and know how to exit a building or area safely. You should also know how to contact the University Police Department from an on campus phone; in case of an emergency 9-1-1 or dial ext. 53791 from any phone on campus.

If you see something unusual do not confront the situation, please notify the University Police Department immediately. Never hesitate or second guess yourself especially during a heightened alert.

Use Common Sense During or After an Event

It will be important that you react in a calm rational manner. While it is easy for panic to set in, you will be safer if you can control your emotions and get yourself to safety. Never enter or go near a building that has been damaged by an explosion, fire or smoke. It is better if you move away from the scene of any incident.

Avoid becoming part of a crowd. Sometimes panic can set a crowd into a frenzy and more injuries may result.

Have Communication Plans

Take some time to consider how you might contact friends and family should an emergency occur. Panicked family and friends may become more panicked if they can't contact you or vice versa. Consider that some communication services may be interrupted, you may not be able to get to a computer or the campus network may be down making it impossible to send emails.

Be Informed

Due to the national crisis and the potential for terrorist activity, The University Police Department has developed the following informational Web Site. It was designed to answer questions you may have and provide resourceful information. The following links may assist you in developing a safety plan for you and/or your family.
